Walking With Friends

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Today"s walk with good friends had lots of discussion.  The closing of the birthing unit at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital came as a surprise and today's article in the NVD  was front page material.

To everyone working in the unit I am personally heartsick and am thinking of you.

Hopefully the community will say we need this.  It is a part of us.  The idea of women being redirected to Front Royal seems very foreign.

At any rate if this door closes I believe there is always a new one opening.

Walking In The Burg

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

So much going on.  Can't find my camera to take pictures, but the burg is alive.  We walked a little later today and saw a lot more people out and about.  It seems walking may be catching on.  Yesterday on our way back we saw to couples from our subdivision coming back in from walking.

Mark and Noel have a new due any day and waiting for the call.  I am working on switching over to my new company

http://www.realestate.com/

and there are lots of things we need to be doing around the house.

So anyway we saw another friend Marian while we were walking and she was in a hurry but said to drop and have an ice cream cone at Rosie's.    We don't get as many invitations during the winter so this was nice.   Everything is in bloom, the grass is green after a week of rain and the baby animals are everywhere.

We were saying this morning that people pay good money to do things and we take this area where we live for granted.  We are repenting and getting to know our burg and surrounding area better.  If you know of a favorite place or thing we haven't mentioned, let us know.

After the walk we stopped by the Garden of Eden for a coffee but they were closed.  Then we saw the sign down the street for the "Filling Station".  A very nice woman offered a locally roasted cup of coffee.  Who knew there was a "roaster" in Luray?  Years ago I was in Lessburg and stopped in a coffee shop.  They roasted too, and the smell of coffee was overwhelming.  I wonder if they are still there.

Anyway another great day in the burg.

Todays Walk In The Burg!

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Even though we have all sorts of things happening good and bad, the walk club enjoys each other and the beauty around us.  The last couple of days the landscape has emerged green and lush.  Spirea is in bloom, the lilacs are scenting the air and there is a hydrangea on one of the side streets that is phenomenal.

We met Linda a neighbor and friend who lives across from the hydrangea and she told us all about the history.  The owner bought it and has restored it.  Ned Irvin did the inside work and has a great reputation here in the burg.  It belonged to her mother who was born in the house and lived to 100 years.  They use it on weekends.  There is also a huge magnolia in the backyard that could decorate a dozen homes at Christmas.

The best part of the walks here lately have been the fowl.  They have been fruitful and multiplying.  A pair of Chinese geese have 1 gosling and what a picture to see them swimming from the bridge  on Rt. 11 with the baby in between.

Then there is a set of mallards who have almost a dozen little ones.  We have seen them on Water Street and up by the Mill.

We also have a set of Canadian geese with a dozen or so, swimming at the end of Water Street in the Shenandoah River.  They also have a third mature goose who sets watch as the sentry.  When you get too close he starts the siren.

Altogether, a great time to walk and catch the new life abounding!

Sunshine At Last

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I don't know how long it will last and we are out of drought conditions but there has been 30 consecutive minutes of unadulterated sun?    Here in the burg that is something to get excited about.  For all those that suffer from vitamin d deficiency ( I think that's what is), hurry up and "get you some sun" (that is to be read with a southern accent, been readin The Secret Life of Bee's) before it goes back into hiding.

We will be headed out shortly and are planning to do the A team walk, the B team walk and C team if the weather permits.  This is like a new lease on life.

Tonight we will eat at Ben Franklin's in Woodstock (real mashed potatoes) and then visit our friend Norma at the nursing home.

So our day is planned.  So how about you?

Walking with Kay and John in Meyersdale, Pa.

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

My cousin John and his wife Kay came for a visit to Meyersdale, Pa.

This last year has had a lot of stress and my Aunt Louise died about 6 moths ago.  John who has been like a brother to me came to Meyersdale for a visit and we reconnected.   Once you have kids your social sphere can change drastically so John and I haven't seen as much of each other over the last 20 years.

You know it only takes a small piece of time and you can be right back in sync with someone.  We stayed up till the wee hours of the morning talking and laughing.  It was a good.

The next morning we showed them around town.  We think Meyersdale is a jewel.  Not because it is pristine and perfect, but rather it is filled with real people.  You are comfortable here.

We went to the bike path and walked over the trestle.  This is a big trestle.  I didn't know but John has the same problem as my aunt.  A fear of heights.  John said Aunt Louise passed out one time while driving over the bay bridge.  My uncle was able to grab the wheel.

So Johnny did fine at first but then began closing his eyes.  His goal was to go to the other side.  So Kay and Terri grabbed his arms and we walked and talked.  Johnny made it.  We stopped at a little cemetery on the other side where the original Meyers family is buried.  They started Meyersdale.  Then we started back over.  Walking, talking, arm in arm with Johnnie's eyes closed.

I am quite nostalgic as I write this.  There are so many good memories of my aunt and cousins.  I love them all.

I believe we were made to walk arm in arm at times.  That way one of us can close our eyes to the world around us.  Yet we are safe.  Safe till we can walk on our own again.

Ron
